Richard Sands was born in Canandaigua, New York, United States. His father, Marvin, founded a wine business in 1945 which has since grown into the multi-billion dollar Constellation Brands. Constellation is known for its acquisitions, including Robert Mondavi wine and Svedka Vodka, as well as the rights to Grupo Modelo's U.S. beer business. In 2017, Constellation attempted to acquire Jack Daniel's maker Brown-Forman, but the overture was rejected by the Brown family.
