Nicholas Campbell Death | Is Nicholas Campbell Dead
Nicholas Campbell is alive and well. In 2011, he woke from a nap at his Toronto home to discover his right arm seemed “dead asleep.” As if that was not enough, he got out of bed and fell over. Quickly, he realized that his leg “was not there either.” It was mysterious but passing. Or so he thought.
Dismissing it as “some unfortunate acid flashback” he went about his business. But the symptoms returned later that night. So he reluctantly went to the hospital where he learned he had suffered a stroke.
Explaining the incidence, he said “By the time the next morning came, I was dead on the right side,” “They told me I would never walk without a cane or a leg brace. ”
However, Nicholas Campbell, 62 at the time, proved them wrong. Still, it seems a sad commentary on Canadian celebrity that an actor of his stature and experience would go through this serious health scare with nary a mention in the press.
To be fair, part of this might be because the stroke did not prevent Campbell from working even as he endured rehab and suffered limited mobility.
In fact, he says the only job he couldn’t do during that period was reprising the role of a crotchety recluse Will Vernon. The character was first introduced to Canadians in the 2010 Heartland Christmas special on CBC.
Given his devotion to the craft, it’s hardly surprising that Campbell seems to have taken a “when-life-gives-you-lemons” approach to deal with the aftermath of his health problems.
“My look has changed so much that I haven’t been able to watch myself,” Nicholas Campbell says with a laugh. “Since I came out of the hospital I’ve been putting on weight constantly. I’m not as mobile or active as I used to be.
All the cokes I drink and stuff, my waist just went on me. I didn’t work very much between January and when I went out (to Alberta). So I wasn’t shaving. When I heard I had (the part), I said ‘I’m going to stick with this.’ I grew the beard out and let the hair grow.”
