Darnell Nurse is a Canadian professional ice hockey defenseman who currently plays for the Edmonton Oilers of the National Hockey League (NHL).
Darnell Nurse began his professional hockey career with the Edmonton Oilers in 2014 after being selected by the teams seventh overall in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft and in August 2021, he signed an eight-year, $74 million extension with the Oilers.
Further, he played two games in the 2014-15 season and was a key part of Canada‘s first-place finish at the 2015 IIHF World Championship. Nurse has been a consistent player for the Oilers, playing in 599 games and scoring 66 goals and 169 assists for a total of 235 points in his career.
Nurse has been named an alternate captain for the Oilers and has been a key player for the team, leading them in regular season ice time. He has also been suspended for one game in the past for head-butting an opposing player.

Darnell was born on February 4, 1995, in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada has two sisters. Younger sister, Kia Nurse, born on February 22, 1996, and eldest sister, Tamika Nurse, was born on September 25, 1987 .
His sister Kia Nurse is a professional basketball player for the Seattle Storm of the WNBA. She has also played for the Canadian national team, winning gold medal at the at the 2015 Pan American Games.
Moreover, she also won two NCAA championships with the Connecticut Huskies and and is currently a guard for the WNBA’s New York Liberty.
On the other hand, his other sister, Tamika Nurse is an image consultant who runs It Girl Industries, a Chicago-based company that provides image consultant services. She also played basketball for the University of Oregon and Bowling Green.

Darnell hails from a prominent family of athletes. He is the son of Richard Nurse and Cathy Nurse.
His father, Richard Nurse, played as a wide receiver for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the Canadian Football League for six seasons. While, his mother, Cathy, was a college basketball player for the McMaster Marauders.
Furthermore, Darnell’s aunt, Raquel Nurse, was a four-year letter-winner for Syracuse University‘s women’s basketball team, who played as a point guard and won the school’s athlete of the year in 1997, twice the team MVP, and the Big East Scholar-Athlete of the Year for the 1997-98 season.
Raquel married Donovan McNabb, Darnell’s uncle, a star NFL quarterback, mostly for the Philadelphia Eagles.
Also worth mentioning, Darnell’s cousin, Sarah Nurse, is a forward who also plays hockey for Canada. She played for Toronto of the National Women’s Hockey League after her NCAA career at the University of Wisconsin.
